The revolution that is not coming

I have a strange feeling that the world of metal detectors is stuck at a certain point. We have been waiting for spectacular changes for years and they are not coming… maybe they are coming differently, but on a different scale than we expected.

Minelab Manticore or XP DEUS II are really good devices, but do they bring anything groundbreaking apart from the dose of well-known solutions?

Certainly, SMF devices are better than what we know from the past, but they are also not without their flaws. The advantages include stable operation in more difficult conditions and better ID compared to single-frequency devices. More accurate signaling of objects from both ends of the scale – low and high conductors. This makes detection easier. This makes detection easier, e.g. old and fine silver is the beginning of the scale close to iron, while large is its other end in SMF, it works really well.

What disadvantages? Less resistance to EMI interference – after all, we work in a wider frequency range and slightly worse performance when it comes to depth.

In my case, I always choose an advantage in the form of better identification and separation in iron, and this can be different, opinions are divided here.

It must be remembered that such a Nexus MPV3 is completely immune to EMI interference, which makes it much deeper and, after adding the adaptive speed of separating the target, insurmountable … unfortunately, you have to pay for it and it is a device for conscious detectorists. It is not light and consumes 10 AA batteries in a short time. Something for something as they say.

We also have the Tarsacci MDT 8000 with hybrid PI and VLF technology. A mix of pulse device performance and VLF discrimination. The detector is really deep and works great in iron or with magnetic stones. Unfortunately, target signaling and its interpretation is no more difficult than in VLF and SMF devices.

It’s better, multi-frequency detectors are more stable. Such a good old Whites Spectra, using three frequencies, is much shallower and very susceptible to interference. It will not separate as well, especially in iron. In addition, under high-voltage lines, there is no chance and nothing will change it, no change of settings.

It remains to wait and watch what the next years will bring, I know that it will be interesting, that’s for sure.

Which pinpointer to choose?

What pinpointer picks a mole? As a rule, the answer we hear is the cheapest one, a large error. The tools should be of good quality, and so should the additional detector for precise tracking of objects in the hole.

Whether it will be waterproof is another matter, but above all, it must be easy to use and effective.

Here you can forget about effective cheap devices. Chinese counterfeits of key brands somehow work there, but it is a chocolate-like product. Difficult to track, poor performance, few features, and poor quality. Waste of time. Someone who used branded equipment knows that it is an investment for years and it is worth adding so as not to be nervous later in the field.

The topic of whether a pinpointer is needed at all can be postponed. Is. It makes work easier and saves time. It’s worth having such a tool, period and end.

What else to pay attention to? First, is the power source. Built-in rechargeable batteries or replaceable batteries. As I know from experience, we will not charge an empty battery in the middle of the forest, just like we will not buy a battery. Both solutions have their drawbacks.

Vibrations, sound, and a flashlight are now standard in devices of this type, but volume control or sound type is not necessary. Some models have the option of wireless communication with the detector or wireless headphones. This is a very useful feature. We automatically hear the pinpointer sound when turned on, and when the metal detector audio is turned off.

The battery charge indicator is useful to avoid problems and disappointment. As a rule, it works by flashing the flashlight diode or changing its color.

Our mole should also have a cover for the parts, which we bury passionately in the soil, we will avoid the costly replacement of the housing, which is the majority of the price of the entire device.

Tenderness can be our friend as well as our enemy. Why? Too high causes interference and reduces the stability of work, too small makes the detector insensitive to small artifacts – such as micro jewelry, which can be of great importance when searching on the beach.

A good quality holster or lanyard will protect the device against loss, and the lost notification system will allow you to try to find the device in a stalemate.

Finally, an important tip, some pinpointers can interfere with the detector. It’s worth checking it out before buying.

The silent killer

There are days when all the monotony is dazzling. And this time it happened. A narrow strip of land, your own buried holes, footprints, and… bang! Signals appear coin by coin. Not that immediately some spectacular silverware. Popularity, but what satisfaction!

One clear thing came to me that has been bothering me for a long time, but let’s start from the very beginning. The premiere of XP Deus II and Nokta Makro The Legend, a number of videos and opinions, and in addition strongly divergent. I own both devices myself, so I started testing. It’s a bad time of year. Summer. Hot and a lot of UV radiation, which, as we know, negatively affects the probes. One place and still the same effect. The work is stable for a while, and then it is difficult to master the device. It does not indicate interference, only the ID jumps, it is difficult to track the target, and the identification scale closes from start to finish. Then I put it down to UV and temperature, and in part it certainly was, but I didn’t take into account the biggest problem of SMF technology … EMI interference, and the quiet ones that you can’t see.

In a regular VLF device, one frequency is easier to manage in terms of external interference, we can see more and we have more control. In the case of a multi-frequency and, moreover, simultaneous device, no longer.

For example, to put it simply, if the device uses two frequencies and one of them is disturbed and simply does not work, we have no chance for correct identification, tracking, and signaling of the target, and the depth performance can be forgotten.

A typical example from my tests is a Minelab Equinox 800 under two parallel high-voltage lines. Quiet and stable and at the same time 5 cm shallow!

The same thing happened to me with Deus II and The Legend. Hence the opinions on the Internet that the equipment does not work and sucks. Mistake! It’s EMI interference. How can you get rid of them and what can be done to make working with the SMF detector problem-free?

We start with detuning from interference (scanning is usually automatic). It is worth carrying out this process from time to time just in case. The next step is sensitivity, we go down to the level of stable operation of the detector and lack of interference, and excitation. All freaks twisting to the max will die in this place. The target’s signal will not cut through the interference. It’s like driving a car with a high beam in the fog. Suicide. The ground calibration, was corrected and checked. How to verify? There is a method for this, apart from effective and stable work and a handful of coins in your pocket, you can use the so-called leading signal threshold. Stable means the detector is operating smoothly and the signal is set correctly.

DeepTech Vista Gold Hound is really worth it

DeepTech replaces Tesoro in the production of typical knob metal detectors. While the build quality of the US manufacturer was higher, the electronics and its work are definitely better on the side of the Bulgarian manufacturer.

The latest Vista Gold Hound model is a traditional two-tone detector with the added threshold function. The device is fabulously simple and convenient to use. Low iron tone, high color.

It doesn’t take much time, just turn it on and everything becomes easy. We start with setting a stable level of sensitivity, and ground calibration, and end with adjusting the threshold, which is actually an additional filter that stabilizes the work and allows you to suppress ground disturbances or, on the other hand, strengthen the ghost signals.

Gold Hound works at 30 kHz and is extremely stable. No crackling, squeaking, or false response from the soil. It really makes a big impression. Two simple signals and we know everything.

I had the opportunity to compare it with other detectors in a place with high mineralization and a huge amount of iron. Gold Hound reigns in terms of working comfort. It is stable and the signals are clear and sure, no dilemma about whether to dig or not. It fastens perfectly on the targets and gives additional information in the form of a low tone if we are dealing with corrosion. The break signal is not uniform and changes over time, it can also be quieter and give a distortion effect for very deep objects.

There are also disadvantages. No double discrimination makes us dig every color. This is a big plus, we won’t miss anything, unfortunately, it’s a problem in a large dumpster. In this case, DeepTech Vista X has the advantage of double discrimination, of which we can be sure to some extent.

Another problem is the frequency of operation … the device is really one of the deepest that we have working at 30 kHz and to such an extent that it can easily compete with 14 kHz! Yes! High mineralization and iron are not a problem, but clutter and small, thin plaques are. They strike like big coins and there is no difference in audio.

On a good spot, this detector is real gold, thin silver coins that most high-end toys do not signal. No problem! Vista Gold Hound will separate even the most masked objects in the area of rusty nails.

For extreme places, you can buy a SuperSix probe. This small sniper rifle, as the name suggests, will allow you to reach difficult places, with such iron condensation, where other detectors simply cannot process signals.

XP DEUS I and DEUS II which is better?

The flood of films about the advantage of DEUS I over DEUS II amused me a hundred times. Customers don’t know what to do… wait or buy?! In addition, there are also software updates, which cause a flood of extreme comments about the version that works and which does not. Complete confusion and chaos.

The first spline is a proven generation of metal detectors, we know all their advantages and disadvantages in everyday use. Model II is a great unknown, it would seem because multi-frequency technology is present in this model for the first time! Not completely. We have a MONO program where we can use DEUS II like its predecessor by selecting only single operating frequencies. We get two in one.

The new god of detectors works really well, and subsequent bugs are gradually corrected. This is not only the case for the French company XP, the competition is struggling with similar problems. Even domestic producers have found out that changing the software can be the key to success or total failure. The question is how much the hardware will allow us – i.e. the tripe of the detector. How good they are to meet the developer challenge.

For me, one thing is certain, DEUS I is by no means a thing of the past, but on the secondary market. The question is when XP will withdraw it from production and become an icon of sales portals like the old Whites models. We’ll see, meanwhile, it’s worth considering buying this detector, unfortunately, the price is an obstacle, over PLN 7,599 gross is an amount unavailable for many in Polish realities, even in the sphere of dreams.

So what does the new technology give and what does it change for the statistical Seeker? It’s simple, the device works more stably, is deeper, and in the case of a salty sea beach and highly mineralized clay, it allows you to reach deeper. For a lot of iron, hardware from France shines. Low and high conductors are signaled similarly confidently and unambiguously, which cannot be said about devices operating at one operating frequency. The above advantages will be useful in certain conditions and not everyone needs it, most users will be satisfied with much cheaper equipment, but there is one thing, but … Ergonomics and weight are unbeatable, the lack of cables also makes life easier, although DEUS II, like its predecessor, requires an experienced operator, or a lot of self-denial in learning the device.

If the assumptions described above are not met, it is worth getting interested in something simpler, because some functions require full understanding and, what is worse, they are permanently interconnected, which complicates the matter even more. Yes, it all takes time and patience, but it will certainly pay off in the future when others will have to give up.

XP DEUS II program RELIC and IAR

The new XP DEUS II surprises. I mean this seriously because over the last few years my DEUS I has been dusting a bit in the closet. As you can see, the French have drawn conclusions and decided to change a lot for the better. The new audio does the job. It does not tire, it is soft and pleasant. This is important because the detector should give joy, not fatigue. This is often the last bastion of freedom for many of us. Our couple of hours on the weekend, separated from reality in nature.

IAR (Iron Amplitude Rejection) discrimination and the RELIC program I decided to test on a well-known field with high mineralization and high iron content. First, run and I can’t hear the audio. Nervous situation. Restarts the hardware. In this place, all the equipment sounds beautiful … but not the new DEUS II. It is so stable that I was fooled like a child by a supposedly non-working loudspeaker … For the first 20 minutes, both Mariusz and I are completely surprised. No, we don’t find anything, but that’s not the point. The detector signals target only. Audio flows and multi-technology stabilize the rough ground. How about the performance? Too early to judge.

To make it better, it is All metal and you can also hear iron, although factory muted. The time for real tests will come in the season. Playing at temperatures below zero degrees Celsius is a bit masochistic, but it was worth it. Remember to subscribe and we’ll meet soon.

DeepTech metal detector – heir to Tesoro

The Tesoro metal detector was synonymous with durability and quality, simplicity, and outstanding performance. Unfortunately, like Whites Electronics, it was lost in the depths of history. It won’t come back anymore. DeepTech used the legacy of Tesoro, adding a lot from themselves, and while you can have reservations about the quality of workmanship, absolutely not when it comes to performance and audio.

Analog devices

The simplicity of analog knobs and two-tone audio does not appeal to every Seeker or Detector. You have to be born with it or love it. There are no bells and whistles, you will not see the display and numerical identification of the target. Ground calibration is manual. In this way, we get to know the roots of detecting, and the adventure with the metal detector becomes complete. We learn the equipment and the principle of operation, we understand many factors that we normally miss.

Such analog organicity in the world of metal detectors. The lack of a scale of numbers forces us to constantly work, it is more difficult to skip items because you have to check it. Our hearing becomes our ally in the search, and not the board in the detector housing, but our brain becomes the computer. There is a no faster and better computer.

I remember Mariusz and I were surprise when, testing the 14-inch probe for the Vista X detector, we buried Kopeyka at 67 cm in an arable field. We couldn’t believe that the device would signal it. We checked a couple of times. We had doubts about whether something had been overlooked us. Next was a 47 cm thin silver coin, similarly loud and clear. The last was the base of the IWW fuse, a trifle 1 meter 20 centimeters long. There are no illusions.

On top of everything comes double discrimination, which allows you not to lose off-road performance. The most important depth. Other metal detectors don’t have that choice. We set discriminate and lose performance. Here we can check items. In the DeepTech Vista X model, there is also the so-called. Threshold, i.e. adjustment of the threshold signal, in this case, it is rather a ground filter, allowing for smooth regulation of its response. We want to work silently, without ghost signals or interference, we just turn and kick certain signals only. We want to reach deep, we dial the threshold and look for ghost signals. We only dig the silent deepest targets.


Alternative to SMART PRO+

Anyone who appreciates simplicity can choose the SMART PRO+ model. Why? It does not have double discrimination or Threshold, but it has a Pinpoint with which we can precisely target targets and, with a little practice, check their type. A simple and intuitive device, which, according to the manufacturer’s assurances, is not inferior to the Vista X model.


Finally, there’s the Vista Gold Gain II metal detector. The high frequency of operation allows searching in heavier soil conditions and with greater iron contamination and highlights small and thin objects. Gold jewelry or silver coins are no longer a problem.

Metal detector – what to pay attention to?

People who want to start their adventure by searching for coins, jewelry, historical memorabilia, and other valuable items can choose from VLF dynamic detectors, pulse detectors, and IB detectors from many manufacturers and in a wide price range.

What parameters, in particular, are worth paying attention to so that the selected model is 100% suited to our needs? The most important parameters here are:

Operating mode – one of the most important parameters to pay attention to is the detector’s operating mode, there are static and dynamic devices available.

What are the differences between them?

Static mode – when the probe approaches a metal object, the detector reacts by changing the sound intensity. The detector beeps as long as the object is in range of the device, and stops when neutral. By changing the modulation of the audio signal, it is possible to determine some of the characteristics of a metal object.

Dynamic mode – the detector responds with a change in sound intensity when a metal object is nearby. Unlike devices operating in static mode, it goes silent when the person operating the detector stops.
Resetting function – changing the detector’s settings may occur as a result of temporal or thermal instability, here the resetting function is extremely useful, which allows you to efficiently (just press the appropriate button) return to the previously set detector functions. Discrimination mode – it should be noted that not all metal objects found in the ground are important for seekers – we are talking about cans or foil, for example. Instead of wasting time digging up and cleaning useless items, it is worth focusing only on those that are important to us. This is why detectors with discrimination mode are the recommended solution. Discrimination is the device’s ability to identify buried objects based on their conductivity and ferromagnetic properties. Advanced detectors are equipped with 5 discrimination modes, they are:

discrimination disabled, all metal objects are signaled with one tone, so-called all-metal

the device does not detect ferrous objects – silent discrimination (they are omitted in the audio line)

in the case of detecting ferrous objects, the detector signals them with a low tone, in the case of other objects, the tone is high

discrimination of selected non-ferrous metals – the selective setting of signaling depending on the conductivity scale (numerical ID scale)

tonal signaling of all conductors – the so-called Multitone. Each conductor has a different signal, often the ID scale is up to 99

Probe – coil detects electromagnetic waves that are sent to the ground and receives electromagnetic waves induced in the object.

DD or CC probe. We have a choice of coaxial or DD probes, each has its advantages and disadvantages.

Shaft – has a significant impact on the weight of the device as well as its compactness and ergonomics. The peak of dreams is a carbon fiber telescopic version.

Ground balance – every treasure hunter should be aware that there may be small iron particles, salts, or other minerals in the ground that will cause the detector to react. The ground balancing function ensures that we only hear signals from an object buried in the ground, and the sound is not affected by the ground response. We can list three modes of ground tuning, these are manual, automatic, ground tracking, and so-called tracking.

Power supply – another factor that we must pay attention to is the power supply of the device. Remember that not only the capacity of the battery or power cells counts but also their weight – the lighter, the less tiring the hikes will be.

Detector weight – heavy detectors are simply inconvenient and impractical. It is therefore worth betting on a model that will be durable and at the same time relatively light.

Range – the range of the detector depends on the size of the underground object. In the case of a button or coin, the range can be even 10-25 centimeters and more, in the case of a larger medium-sized object 50-80 cm, and in the case of large objects about 1.5 m.

In addition to the above-mentioned features, it is worth paying attention to such issues as a loudspeaker that will guarantee the high signal quality, an adjustable armrest that will increase comfort while searching, an intuitive interface with which you can adjust the volume and discrimination, and set other key functions.
