Test track or practical knowledge?

In the past, I had a lot of inquiries as to why I don’t have a test track. It doesn’t work for a simple reason. It doesn’t work. You can compare the cutters together on the same day and it will still be a demonstration test, not a comparative test. For a simple reason, external factors affect what happens to the detector. Temperature and UV radiation change everything, and if we add the processes taking place in the soil under the influence of these factors, we have a complete picture.

I remember one day we went to the old spot after the rain. The temperature dropped below 20 degrees Celsius and the ground was damp. Coins started popping up like mushrooms after the rain. A week later, at around 28 degrees, nothing came out, but the next week at 23 degrees, more came out!

We followed in our footsteps. In addition, there are EMI interferences, the quiet ones, and those we can observe. All you need is a transmitter to send data packets and you can go home. Half the trouble, as you can see and hear after the behavior of the device, unfortunately, the quiet EMI simply cuts off the possibility of detection, which I don’t even know about. At such a moment, it would be enough to put a coin on the surface and the device simply does not see it.

The heat causes the probe to drift, despite numerous patents compensating for this condition, from painting it white to changes in electronics or software. This is best heard after the lead signal if we have such an option.

Another example. XP DEUS II. The RELIC program is all set up for the seat. The first 20 minutes are brilliant. Stable audio, leading signal. After 20 minutes, despite detuning the interference every 20 minutes, it’s not fun anymore. I can clearly feel the deterioration of performance and stability. This can be seen in the lead signal, which clearly undulates when sweeping over a clean area … I mean conventionally clean because it is full of iron.

Also, only work in various conditions gives a full picture of the device, do not fall for the tricks of testers who have not devoted a minimum of 200 hours to the device in various conditions. Real knowledge comes after 2000 hours and then questions arise about what is a natural process.

I encourage you to ask questions in this article.

Tarsacci MDT 8000 how to set up?

How to set up the Tarsacci MDT 8000 detector correctly? The device has a clear and simple menu, without any hidden functions, but still requires a lot of time to take advantage of the new technology, which is not used by any other manufacturer.

The first and key choice is the operating frequency of our detector. We choose from 6.4 to 18 kHz. Interestingly, even a low frequency allows us to detect very small objects in size … well, the charm of PI (pulse induction) used in this hybrid. Lower frequency means better performance – depth, but also worse separation of objects in cluttered terrain. It is also better for signaling coin-shaped and volume objects, as opposed to foil or pieces of aluminum.

Another workflow problem. We have three types: all metal, discrimination, and mixed mode. All Metal will be good for virgin spots, where the signal appears from the holidays. We only have one and we have to look at the ID displayed on the screen. DISC is the only right solution for total trash. The signal is short and if it is repetitive you have to dig. The mixed mode gives us additional information about the size and depth of the object. Places clean or moderately littered.

Before we start, we look for a clean place and calibrate to the ground, if we still have a signal from the ground, we increase the value by 50, this should mute the device. Next, we hear the response of the ground. We can try to use the SALT function – salinity level. We pump the probe traditionally above the soil and adjust the value to mute the response. The starting point is 29. Finally, we are left with THRESHOLD – TRH. You have to be careful here. Too high a value and we lose ranges and we will not hear small objects. We always set the limit. If the ID shows low values when sweeping the probe, we need to compensate with this function.

Iron breaking through the scale and falling into color can be handled by using a DISC value of -29 or +26. Finally, there is the sensitivity adjustment. It’s not worth exaggerating. MDT 8000 already at a value of 4 is deeper than most known detectors. We eliminate all instabilities and interferences by reducing the sensitivity or changing the frequency.

I am curious about your opinions on the Tarsacci MDT 8000 detector, write under this post.

How important is audio

How important audio is in the case of a metal detector, I don’t have to convince anyone. Someone somewhere wrote it’s a matter of taste… and yes and no. This is the main sense of this hobby, and you can read how important it is in the article below.

Example scenario. A beach filled to the brim with bottle caps. Do they give a beautiful high tone, and their flock next to each other? How to shell a coin?!
This is where smart audio comes to our aid. The first pioneer was Garrett using Iron Audio. If I’m wrong, please comment under this article. A special additional option and a low tone appear on the edges of our unfortunate cap, a break. We have a low, high, and low tone. There is also a disadvantage. You have to sweep slower because the sound is longer in time. It’s hard in a total dump, but you can catch the desired signals.
When we do not have such an option, there is no chance of finding, even a chart will not help us, we will lose a lot of time and nerves. A device not equipped with such a solution will become completely useless in the above scenario. Some manufacturers go further and the sound of the cap becomes intermittent or virtually disappears. Such an idea is also good because it shortens the time of signal emission and relieves the operator.

Why audio should be good and what does it mean? The human brain has a certain resistance to different types of sound. For example, the static noise in the production hall will tire us after a few minutes, as well as sounds of different intensities and frequencies. This type of load causes us to lose our orientation after some time. We will not be able to see what is a valid signal and what is not. The effect of fatigue and loss will completely take away our strength and pleasure from searching.
I’ve had this problem myself many times. For this reason, manufacturers use different versions of sounds. The best example would be XP DEUS II with new SQUARE audio. The sounds are even, melodious and soft to the ear, unlike the old PWM version known from the XP DEUS I model. They may carry slightly less information but are more absorbable in the long run.
Another thing is the change of sounds over time. The above break tells us whether we have a cap or rusty iron under the probe. Good audio saves us trouble. It is not always possible to dig up and check everything, especially when we work in a dump where someone has been throwing away garbage for several hundred years and plowing it cyclically with a plow. In this case, audio with additional information is a godsend.

You can also work in mixed mode, which carries additional information, if it is in the stereo version, then our brain acts as a computer and we hear delays between the static and dynamic channels. This way you can guess what kind of conductor is in the hole. For example copper or iron, or maybe silver? It takes a bit of practice, but it gives me a lot of satisfaction.
Returning to polyphonic sounds or the so-called multi tones. They give an immediate answer as to what object we are dealing with. After a short training, we can hear small breaks and nuances and we can determine with high probability how the tsar’s double-layer button beats, and how a silver coin is next to a nail. With really fast devices equipped with good audio, you can hear the length of the signal and know if the object is a small coin or something larger.
It’s the same with foil. An overdriven buzzing tone and there’s a chance we won’t dig up another cigarette pack remnant or burnt coke residue.

It’s worth trying something new, because it may turn out that our old and worn detector with a gong that sounds like a doorbell missed many interesting things! Like the hardware is too tight. Then we have the effect of long lights in the fog. Sounds blind us, or rather deafen us, just as audio amplification set too high does not allow us to hear the signals of ghosts, i.e. those deepest objects that we so desire.

The headphones I keep mentioning also help to maintain concentration, learn quickly, and easily recognize tones without fighting the noise of the wind and civilization.

I recommend checking the audio line of other devices, even a few moments on equipment borrowed from a friend gives us a subjective comparison. It is worth choosing a detector whose audio was designed by a seeker, not a programmer, and if the first one was a musician, you’ve come to the right place!

Professional detectors for deep excavations

Deposits, relics, or treasures keep many people awake at night. This is every Seeker’s dream. Get something like this. It is not given to everyone.

Deep burials are now rare. It’s not an easy topic. The case is complicated and complex. So what to use for a large animal? Lots of people have heard of it but don’t know it. Frame detector, impulse detector, then there are the terms data logger or graphic imaging.

INVENIO device

The choice is wide and the prices can make you dizzy. From the Nokta Makro offer, you can choose the best INVENIO metal detector. The device in a simple and easy way perfectly illustrates buried items, although it requires attention and a certain work regime. Unfortunately, it is not available to everyone. The price of PLN 35,000 means that it remains in the realm of dreams. It must be remembered that this type of equipment is a poor choice for everyday searches. In addition to the knowledge put in, the solution needs time to interpret the data – to process it. It will be more suitable for archaeological research, field measurements, or when looking for specific things.

Impulse detectors

So what to go with a big animal? I recommend a pulse detector. frame and preferably with a magnetometer. I know from experience that for large militaria the size of the probe is 1 x 1 meter or more. Smaller solutions are too sensitive to small objects and this causes various problems in the field.

In our offer, you will find DeepTech Ground Pioneer 4500. The item is interesting because you can order any frame size in the set and you get an 11-inch probe plus a frame. You can look for small items in the uncluttered areas, such as coins, and this is a big help. If it is clean, the performance will be higher than in classic detectors with VLF technology. PI pulse devices do not have discrimination. The magnetometer helps in the rough differentiation of the so-called color of iron. This is a very helpful solution.

Ciekawostką w ofercie jest sonda do sprawdzania szybów wentylacyjnych czy studni. Można ją zamówić oddzielnie, podobnie jak data logger, który pomaga nam w obrazowaniu znalezisk.

Operation of the detectors

Finally, let’s talk about performance. A beverage can is up to 2 meters deep with a frame size of 1 x 1 meter. In the case of a vehicle, you can talk about performance up to 8 meters. No need to worry, we won’t forget the tank. Objects below the size of a can are not detected, which in the case of surface debris – small can help us.

An additional advantage is an ability to work in the case of a highly mineralized substrate. The disadvantage of this type of device is the speed of operation, lack of discrimination or the need for assistance when using. Two people should carry the probe, and the third one operates the control panel, if we add a data logger to this, the whole thing requires patience, coordination, and an understanding of the operating principles.

So who should choose such a device? Seekers, Deposit Hunters, this type of offer is addressed to them. Archaeologists or geologists document places and also search for empty spaces. As you can see, the application possibilities are quite wide.

Garrett ACE APEX metal detector – is it worth buying a new canary?

I remember starting my adventure with the Garrett AT PRO metal detector today. It was a total infatuation. For those times, it was a really good detector, despite a number of flaws.

Heavy and ill-balanced, it tired my wrist in an instant. A couple of hours and you really wanted to go home. Experts on the subject say that a defect that occurs on land disappears in the water. There is no buoy effect, displacing the device. Possibly, I wasn’t allowed to wade deep with him. The Baltic Sea is for winter, so I only walked on a wet beach. In addition, the manufacturer for many years completely forgot about the ability to adjust the volume level …. Desperate customers did not agree to this, and in the MAX model, you could already enjoy it!

Many years have passed since then. I’ve never been a fan of Garrett’s ACE series. Popular canaries never interested me. Heavy, without the possibility of ground calibration, audio in the form of a chime for the front door scared me away for many years. Don’t get me wrong, it’s first-contact equipment for many, and I started the shelf higher. I was lucky enough to just be able to afford it.

Adventure with the Garrett ACE APEX metal detector

Garrett’s boisterous announcement of a new multi-frequency metal detector was long overdue. The competition has been using this type of device for many years. I had a lot of doubts about whether the new product from the ACE series called APEX would be really good equipment.

The surprise was big. I just had to revoke everything I’d posted before. Very light, well-made, and very simple. These were the first advantages. It is not waterproof, but the time will come after the premiere of the new AT PRO model. When? Nobody knows that.

Full reference to the layout of the buttons from the previous series is a nod to the most conservative users. Simplicity and more simplicity. It only takes a few minutes to switch over, or a few hours to get to know the device from scratch. It’s not everything. When this detector is turned on, there is complete silence. It is incredibly stable. What remains is the boost feature – the sound of the iron, which is quite controversial for one reason. In a heavily littered area, it significantly extends the reaction time, and in a clean one, it allows you to avoid digging garbage. APEX shines on the beach. We will not dig up any caps … which is not so obvious with other devices, even from the top shelf.

The 11-inch probe, working name Viper, is the best solution. It is strongly narrowed, which shortens the reaction time and allows maneuvering in difficult conditions. I do not see the need to change it to something else, because it will take the whole balance to the head, and the performance will change symbolically.

The ability to walk on a salty beach in the additional MS mode, which mutes and stabilizes the device, is a big advantage. We have one more. This is not even Minelab in the cheaper Vanquish models. Frequency selection. Yes, we can choose. 5, 10, 15, or 20 kHz. This is a great option when the conditions are really volatile and we want to look for specific things.

In addition to the advantages, there are also disadvantages of the APEX detector

The APEX metal detector also has disadvantages. This is a typical general cargo vessel, I would choose something completely different when looking for military, and large ones. It is also only rainproof. You can submerge the probe. Electronics no more. Although she survived a snowstorm at my place, so I can’t really complain. The housing has an internal gasket.

Garrett ACE APEX metal detector – summary

To sum up, the APEX metal detector is a really good and simple device, maybe not the cheapest, but the manufacturer has packed nice, modern electronics inside that can cope quite well in harsh conditions. I buy this product, and you?

Metal detector for beginners

Searching for coins, souvenirs and various types of treasures hidden underground is an activity that has many enthusiasts. Every person who wants to start their adventure with treasure hunting should equip themselves with a decent metal detector. What model will be ideal for beginners? We have some tips. We encourage you to read!

Which detector to choose for the beginning?

The choice of metal detectors is very large. There are devices with the logo of many manufacturers, with different parameters and in a wide price range. What issues should you pay attention to when looking for the perfect first detector? We have some tips!

What is our goal?

Question number one is about our goals, which is what we will be looking for. Depending on your preferences, we can focus on searching for coins, military items made of steel, jewelry, items made of non-ferrous metals, and many other valuables. If we want to focus on specific items or do not intend to waste time digging up worthless garbage, a device with a discrimination function will be an excellent choice. And matched to the artifacts we are looking for – objects.

Where will we look for valuables?

Another important issue is the areas of our search. Let’s analyze whether we want to focus on forests, meadows, beaches, and other places of this type, or whether we plan to walk with our device through a river, and ponds, and wander in the waters of seas and lakes.

Metal detector – price

Of course, the purchase of a detector is a cost and often it is not small money. It is good to determine at the outset how much we want and can pay for the device. However, it should be remembered that devices from the lowest shelf, for about PLN 150-200, may not work well and disappoint us or even discourage us from the hobby. The optimal solution for beginners is to buy a mid-range device for about PLN 1000-2500.

Metal detector – working time

The longer the expeditions, the more capacity the device should have. Keep in mind, however, that the weight of the device increases with the capacity of the battery. For beginners, heavy models may not be a very comfortable solution.

Metal detector – technology

For beginners, detectors that are easy to use and have basic functions will work best. Professional equipment is worth buying when you gain experience.

Metal detector – which one to choose?

Jaki wykrywacz do metalu wybrać?

Treasure hunting – coins, jewelry, and other valuable items is an interesting hobby that is becoming more and more popular. Of course, in order to start your adventure, you must first equip yourself with a decent metal detector. What issues should you pay attention to when choosing the perfect device? Below are some tips. We encourage you to read!

Metal detector – what to pay attention to?

People who want to start their adventure by searching for coins, jewelry, historical memorabilia, and other valuable items can choose from VLF dynamic detectors, pulse detectors, and IB detectors from many manufacturers and in a wide price range.

What parameters, in particular, are worth paying attention to so that the selected model is 100% suited to our needs? The most important parameters here are:

Operating mode – one of the most important parameters to pay attention to is the detector’s operating mode, there are static and dynamic devices available.

What are the differences between them?

Static mode – when the probe approaches a metal object, the detector reacts by changing the sound intensity. The detector beeps as long as the object is in range of the device, and stops when neutral. By changing the modulation of the audio signal, it is possible to determine some of the characteristics of a metal object.

Dynamic mode – the detector responds with a change in sound intensity when a metal object is nearby. Unlike devices operating in static mode, it goes silent when the person operating the detector stops.
Resetting function – changing the detector’s settings may occur as a result of temporal or thermal instability, here the resetting function is extremely useful, which allows you to efficiently (just press the appropriate button) return to the previously set detector functions. Static device domain.

Discrimination mode – it should be noted that not all metal objects found in the ground are important for seekers – we are talking about cans or foil, for example. Instead of wasting time digging up and cleaning useless items, it is worth focusing only on those that are important to us. This is why detectors with discrimination mode are the recommended solution. Discrimination is the device’s ability to identify buried objects based on their conductivity and ferromagnetic properties. Advanced detectors are equipped with 5 discrimination modes, they are:

discrimination disabled, all metal objects are signaled with one tone, so-called all-metal

the device does not detect ferrous objects – silent discrimination (they are omitted in the audio line)

in the case of detecting ferrous objects, the detector signals them with a low tone, in the case of other objects, the tone is high

discrimination of selected non-ferrous metals – the selective setting of signaling depending on the conductivity scale (numerical ID scale)

tonal signaling of all conductors – the so-called Multitone. Each conductor has a different signal, often the ID scale is up to 99

Probe – coil detects electromagnetic waves that are sent to the ground and receives electromagnetic waves induced in the object.

DD or CC probe. We have a choice of coaxial or DD probes, each has its advantages and disadvantages.

Shaft – has a significant impact on the weight of the device as well as its compactness and ergonomics. The peak of dreams is a carbon fiber telescopic version.

Ground balance – every treasure hunter should be aware that there may be small iron particles, salts, or other minerals in the ground that will cause the detector to react. The ground balancing function ensures that we only hear signals from an object buried in the ground, and the sound is not affected by the ground response. We can list three modes of ground tuning, these are manual, automatic, ground tracking, and so-called tracking.

Power supply – another factor that we must pay attention to is the power supply of the device. Remember that not only the capacity of the battery or power cells counts but also their weight – the lighter, the less tiring the hikes will be.

Detector weight – heavy detectors are simply inconvenient and impractical. It is therefore worth betting on a model that will be durable and at the same time relatively light.

Range – the range of the detector depends on the size of the underground object. In the case of a button or coin, the range can be even 10-25 centimeters and more, in the case of a larger medium-sized object 50-80 cm, and in the case of large objects about 1.5 m.

Metal detector – other parameters
In addition to the above-mentioned features, it is worth paying attention to such issues as a loudspeaker that will guarantee the high signal quality, an adjustable armrest that will increase comfort while searching, an intuitive interface with which you can adjust the volume and discrimination, and set other key functions.

Summary
Searching for hidden objects in the ground is an exciting hobby that is becoming more and more popular. On a great treasure hunt, of course, a metal detector is essential. What parameters should you pay attention to when choosing the perfect model? Here you can list issues such as operating mode, discrimination mode, operating frequency, probe size, iron masking, frame, ground balance, power supply, weight, or range.
In case of problems with the choice, it is worth relying on the help of specialists who will carefully analyze our needs and propose the optimal solution.

Minelab Manticore or XP DEUS II?

XP DEUS II vs Minelab Manticore who will win this duel? It depends … it depends on what we expect from both detectors because both are really good.

DEUS II is the king of ergonomics when it comes to the lack of cables, weight – 960 grams, and compactness, and there has been no competition in this category for years. What else? The audio was created by a real musician. Also undefeated for years, although Minelab created more pleasant tones and less tiring, also worse describing the subject. What is the difference? On nuances and additional sounds and their change and their modulation and volume. A piece of aluminum in the form of a can sounds differently than a coin, even if it is similar in its conductivity. It’s a lot. After a while, we know what is what. That’s what it’s supposed to be about. Disadvantage? In the long run, such audio can cause fatigue, especially in areas littered or full of iron. This is a minor difference, but for an experienced user, it is crucial.

Do we know anything more? Yes. Thomas Dankowski from the USA is a well-known American device tester before releasing them to the market. Over 40 years of experience is indisputable and his contribution to the development of many well-known devices is crucial. He has been testing Minelab Manticore for over a year and on the Dankowski forum (link: https://www.dankowskidetectors.com/discussions/index.php) he shared his observations with us, comparing it to devices such as XP DEUS II and Tarsacci MDT 8000 which also tested.

The Minelab Manticore was tested on the coast and on the beach, the inland tests simply did not take place and according to Thomas, the new Minelab is a slightly worse separating detector than the XP DEUSA II. Calabash Digger drew similar conclusions in his tests, which can be seen on his YouTube channel.

One important observation has been mentioned, the Manticore will be slightly deeper and it’s a matter of an inch or so (2-3 cm). This means performance at the level of the Tarsacci MDT 8000, which is a PI/VLF hybrid device and this means that such equipment is always deeper.

The 2D visualization of the Minelab detector in a clear field allows you to analyze the target, something more than the well-known XY plot from DEUSA XP. Unfortunately, with a large amount of iron, it does not work so perfectly and can lead to disappointment. As we know, everything requires learning.

The thing to check is the color spoof issue with heavy condensation of rusty items, but that takes time and fieldwork. It should be remembered that new software updates can change a lot for both manufacturers.

Minelab Manticore The beast is out of the cage

The new beast Minelab Manticore detector and my first impressions. The price knocks you off your feet, but let’s leave it for now and start with the ML 105 wireless headphones. The build quality itself is top shelf. It can be discussed whether such closed and thickly upholstered headphones are a good choice. It’s a matter of taste and season.

Everything is complemented by a spiral cable with jack plugs for connecting headphones via a waterproof connector in the panel. Different sound quality and a nice option. Although I would not enter the water with such a set … it will fall and there is no topic.

The armrest is another example of how you can approach it in a practical way. Adjustment with a simple latch instead of a problematic screw. Way to go.

The soft design of the plastics and the strap with the logo complete the whole. It convinces me, all beautifully set on a carbon fiber seatpost with quick-release locks. In the back part, a plug for rinsing the whole after wading in sandy water. Plus.

The handle with a rubberized grip and a good angle, as well as the undercut for the index finger for weight transfer are another plus.

The panel looks sensational and here the performance of the detector is also not surprising. Buttons, display all in place and finished with the highest quality materials.

The whole is well-balanced and compact, you can’t ask for more. No more flooding electronics like in the old Equinox model and no more breaking probe ears. Now the mount has been moved to the lower element of the frame and even if it breaks, it is not the cost of the entire probe. The 11-inch probe has additional reinforcements and does not stand out from the whole.
