Minelab Equinox 700 and 900 the fish rots from the head

Has become. Minelab announced new models… Equinox 700 and 900. That’s how they did it… they refreshed the line. So what do we get and how is the new model different?!

A flashlight has arrived, vibrations, a wider ID scale, improved ergonomics, a scale for iron from -1 to 0, and for higher conductors from 1 to 99. They went crazy.

Looking soberly, the changes are cosmetic beyond the scale, but how about the price, in our country, it is the dominant factor. Let’s see what the difference is … GBP 799 for the 700 version and GBP 1099 for the 900 version. This means at the current exchange rate of PLN 4354 and PLN 5989 net …

To sum up, PLN 5,356 and PLN 7,367. Is it supposed to be an alternative to the almost PLN 10,000 Manticore and a response to the fans of the brand who said that someone exaggerated the price? This is how the mouth closes efficiently. Pure marketing. You can not afford it?! Buy yourself a cheaper one… see what we have prepared for you. A slight facelift and refreshed device can be yours.

How does the price compare to the competition? The answer is simple. Miserably. It’s cheaper than Manticore but still expensive. Adding a few goodies won’t make us justify 20% more. There is no chance, although the manufacturer was based on this assumption.

Maybe it’s a matter of prejudice, but Equinox has never convinced me and many of my colleagues feel the same way. After a year of use, I got rid of the device without much regret. It is possible that it was a mistake, but compared to the old XP DEUS model, Whites Spectra or decent DeepTech analogs, I did not see any greater depth, better identification, or stable work.

It is possible that the new models are much better, but I see no reason to be interested in them. Whether this is a mistake time will tell.

Coming back to the prices, well, we live in such no other conditions and only a few can afford expensive devices above PLN 2,500. It is worth remembering and reminding each time because it is not the individual who indicates the goal, but the majority.

XP with panel or without?

The question is simple with or without a panel? ORX, DEUS, and DEUS II are available in the lite version, where the control electronics are replaced by wireless headphones, also with buttons and a display. So which set to choose? Logically, the best and full, unfortunately, the price difference is significant, and on the other hand, you have to pay more later to buy a panel. It is bad either way. So what decision to make?!

If it is to be the first detector, then we can safely give up this add-on. Why? For a simple reason, we have to go by ear and we don’t have a display with ID numbers or a graph. We learn organoleptically from scratch as it should be – that is, by ear! It only pays off and increases our skills. Such mastery of the equipment gives you a lot and allows you to avoid mistakes at the beginning of the road. The second plus is not wasting time on moving the device when we do not fully understand certain functions and dependencies – less chance for wrong setting and skipping items. Finally, the last thing is weight loss, we can live knowing that our equipment is the lightest in the world!

Are you advanced and want to update? Buy yourself a panel, this solution is for you! There is one more option to work with the equipment, first listening and then verification on the chart. That’s how some programs work, and it works.

We have experience and we understand how the detectors work, then the panel is a chance to squeeze out additional possibilities, change the audio or precisely adjust it to the conditions or your own preferences.

How foil masks signals

A great demonstration of how foil, magnetic stones can mask signals. So is iron. Comparison of XP ORX and Tarsacci MDT 8000. Enjoy watching.

Expensive or cheap equipment?

Many of us make a mistake at the very beginning and choose the wrong equipment. The detector should be adapted directly to the conditions that prevail at the workplace as well as expectations regarding the finds. Half the poverty when we are looking for ordinary places without a lot of iron or civilization garbage. In such places, ordinary simple equipment for a few hundred zlotys is enough.

The problem begins when the soil is highly mineralized and we have a high content of iron, ceramics, turf ores, and coke. It turns out that ordinary equipment does not work at all. Did not work. Half the trouble is when we are able to determine it organoleptically and it can be seen from the behavior of the detector. The device energizes, the depth of detection decreases, the ID signaling simply does not work, and the excess iron causes the device to clog and shift in the scale of rusty corrosion to the range of high conductors such as silver. swept away. You can hang the equipment on a peg. There is no topic.

Fortunately, there are several ways to avoid problems. It is known that it is best to buy a high-end detector such as Tarsacci MDT 8000 or XP DEUS II … but who can afford such extravagance nowadays?

We start from scratch. If our equipment has the All Metal mode, we start it immediately. Discrimination is the enemy of every Seeker. End and period. In this way, we improve the performance and the electronics have fewer signals to filter, it is faster and there is less chance that we will miss something. We also start to sweep slower and more accurately. Surveying is fundamental. We assume every move and absolutely parallel to the ground.

Too much interference and false signals? We detune and reduce the sensitivity. It is also worth raising the probe a little higher. Sometimes it helps, also in the case of searching for signals on the surface – a lost wedding ring.

App. Yes, application. I send furious Janusz with the police syndrome to hell. The application is not a record of the services, but a help for you. What? Simple, we see how much we’ve walked and what signals were shown in a given place. You can observe the concentration of finds. You don’t have to upload photos, just a letter marker of the item. On this basis, it is known where to return with other equipment and or improve with the help of the selected program or a new set of settings.

Ground calibration. Just as important as detuning from EMI interference. The basis, the essence of working with the detector. Done right is a chance for success, screwed up is time wasted. Firstly, we look for a clean place, secondly, we double-check. When calibrating, we look at the values, compare, go to another place and try again. Correct identification and depth of detection depend on it. The measurement value tells us what conditions we can face.

Mineralization index. Not every metal detector has it. We check what it shows, and on this basis we are able to predict how much we will lose performance in this place and how to set the equipment exactly.

In the end, there’s always a fat wallet. Does the place produce? Are there results? It’s worth investing in better equipment! Multi-frequency device or in t hybrid technology, pulsed? Why not! Such solutions allow you to break through the iron layer in a more effective way. Equipment doesn’t have to cost a fortune. All the time on the market we will find garage producers who can work wonders. Currently, PI impulse detectors have discrimination and identification, it does not work as well as in popular VLF devices, but it allows you to reopen old places that apparently do not produce anything new!

No one would have believed a few years ago that the so-called. the frames will be in a version with full discrimination and in IB technology. Looking for a big color? No problem, a good example is Pathfinder Nexus, described in one of the articles of this blog.

NEXUS Pathfinder V2 hellish frame with discrimination

The frame detector or the popularly known frame is a really great solution for the big game, but unfortunately also very demanding when it comes to the application itself. Everything has to be carefully thought out because the choice is wide and the possibilities are practically unlimited.

The NEXUS company needs no introduction. This is the world of analog detectors, unreasonably expensive, complicated, and IB technology.

So what is the difference between NEXUS products and others, apart from the quality of workmanship? In addition to performance, this type of two-box allows for quick movement over rough terrain and can only be operated by one person. It has discrimination and we are free to choose the type of guide we are looking for! Color or iron and smooth adjustment. Story!

YouTube player

Brilliant solution, considering that with a probe size of 20 inches, we see objects the size of soda cans and larger! There is no problem with small garbage that can make life unbearably difficult. To this, we will add a choice of operating modes: static and dynamic, ground calibration, and mineralization compensation. The extreme amount of iron is not a hindrance, and the device is made of aluminum and carbon fiber and can be quickly folded. The weight is about 4.5 kg, quite bearable.

Finally, the speed of work and we have a really nice daemon that is handy and easy to use. What is the voltage on the probes, I’m afraid to ask, and the large heat sink below the control panel is impressive. Below is a table presenting the capabilities of the Nexus Pathfinder V2.

Growing up the place

Growing up the place. How to do it? New equipment costs a lot and usually not everyone can afford large investments. We start by checking what we have and what our colleagues have. We do a summary.

  • Frequency – when the metal detector has variable frequencies to choose from, we look for the lowest one. We set. Then discrimination – the enemy of every Detector, down as low as possible or switching to All Metal modes, we gained in range.
  • Filters – reactivity, the lower the value, the deeper the device, but it separates objects worse. We’ll deal with that too by simply sweeping slower. Other than ID or magnetic stones or identification of caps, it is worth turning off.
  • Sweep probe – maybe it’s worth working on better tracking over the ground? Movements should be slow – about 2 seconds from extreme positions and smooth and parallel all the time to the ground level.
  • Seat post – adjust so that the probe is 3 to 5 cm above its surface. The next centimeters are ours.
  • Sensitivity – it’s time to set it to the level of stable operation and get rid of interference. This is our greatest enemy, shortening our ranges. We always use automatic detuning or manually look for the most stable channel or operating frequency.
  • Ground calibration – something often neglected. It is worth doing it precisely in a clean place. We check and repeat as we work. We track the values and, if necessary and possible, manually adjust the conditions. The next centimeters depend on it!
  • The size of the probe – is significant, despite the common opinion, although the truth is that technique counts. For cluttered places, a smaller one will be ok, for large and clean and relatively even areas, a larger one will be useful, which will improve efficiency and range.
  • The seat itself – the most bizarre thing – the direction of the passage. You need to change the overlap on the objects. Across, diagonally along. We go around every signal for about. I suggest using the Tect O Trak application based on data from the GPS of our phone. It’s a lot of comfort and organization of work, especially when we return to our favorite place.
  • The power of nature – you can use rainfall and wind, which cause the soil to lower over time. Often coins can lie washed out on the surface. Meteo forecast is Windy and Meteo apps.
  • Wunderwaffe – it is also worth borrowing a PI frame detector and walk the same place with a device that only sees larger objects and at a greater depth, we will skip surface debris.

A burnt field or a duel of an analog with a TV set

Is it possible to compare the analog detector DeepTech VistaX to XP DEUSA II? Theoretically yes, although in practice the disproportions are really large that it is impossible to put both devices together directly.

Weight, portability, compactness, and reconfigurability, build quality unbeatable in favor of XP. Audio also gives you more possibilities. Another shelf and another league of equipment, not to mention the price. For one XP DEUS II, we will buy exactly three VistaX!!!

When it comes to working in a littered area, it will also be a bit easier for us, but with one small exception, we will dig less, but we can skip more. In the case of an analog, you need to check and dig. An apparent disadvantage becomes an advantage in a very good seat! Unreliable signal with a bad ID on the display and we will miss the good one, and without we have to check it! A lot of masked signals and coins on the edge are easy to mine! It’s the whole analog mystery. There is something more.

In difficult terrain with a lot of iron, the devices go head to head with one small exception, the analog is always deeper and the difference is really noticeable, which we could check on the passing spot – the so-called. burnt. Easy sandy soil with a settlement base of iron, burnt coal, coke, and pottery. There, both detectors feel really good. The dot over and the nature itself put in the form of a shower, improving performance, but also increasing the risk of excitation of detectors on wet grass.

YouTube player

Both detectors had 11-inch probes. XP DEUS II worked in Deep HC or Relikt. Devices turned to maximum sensitivity. Reactivity in XP set to 1.5 along with a very slow sweep and cross-checking of signals did the job.
The difference is significant where XP, which is really deep, still has 2-3 cm of the reserve before it loses the signal, VistaX is easily over 5 cm deeper! Double discrimination gives you a chance to check the item under the probe. In some situations, the XP was already operating at the edge of the range, where the analog signal was still strong and reliable. At one point, after digging a 50 cm hole, we thought it would be a piece of rusty iron, but no! An object half the size of my little finger was in the dimple!

We must admit one more advantage of both devices, well-calibrated almost to the end of the scale signal – they show well the type of conductor (color or iron). We avoid the dilemma of digging up rusty scrap at the edge of the range… although this scrap can often be worth checking out!

The question is what will be the difference with VistaX with a 14-inch probe… another 5 cm is very real. Unfortunately, there are also disadvantages, a large probe means more mass, poorer balance and separation, and slower sweep. We’ll try to check it. 3D imaging for whom?

Who needs 3D imaging? Is it useful at all in normal searches?

And yes and no… The reason is simple, it is quite a hindrance, which requires some knowledge and imposes a work regime. First of all, we need to properly configure the data logger and metal detector set, and not everyone is suitable for this. It is best to have the device working in static mode with VCO modulation. What does it mean? The tone changes – intensifies and weakens over the target, something like the so-called tracking function. Pinpoint in a dynamic detector. There is also the connection – wiring and signal calibration.

A good device is an equipment working as a PI or pulse induction – pulse detector. The advantage is the performance and stable operation on difficult ground, and the disadvantage is the lack of discrimination. It should be remembered that the imaging will concern rather larger objects. It depends on the probe, of course, but drawing the shapes of coins is rather pointless. We are interested in larger objects and such devices indicate this. The upside is that it’s the little bits that are omitted. It can be safely assumed that the 2×2 meter frame probe signals well objects the size of a can or larger.

The shape, approximate size, and depth are really good information. In an urbanized area, working with this type of device is more difficult due to evidence of human presence and infrastructure, such as pipes or wires. The advantage is also the visualization of empty spaces, such as basements, cavities, etc. A great solution for non-invasive research, site checking, and for commercial documentation of sites.

Currently produced devices, such as the GDI Icon 3D data logger we offer, are a fully wireless solution, for which a simple tablet based on the Android system is enough. If such a set is compared even with the finished Nokta Makro Invenio PRO product, it is 1/3 of the price and we have the option of choosing a detector with which the data logger works and thus slightly better performance, although at the cost of lack of discrimination.

In the end, there is the work regime, after the settings related to the type of detector and probe, select the sweep pattern. The software gives voice messages, and we follow the commands, i.e. we move at a certain time over a certain distance. It is worth marking the route with tape or plastic markers.

In the end, it remains to analyze the data in the form of a 3D chart and enjoy the results of our work!

Clash of the Titans

The recent debut of XP DEUS II gave me a lot to think about. You can still feel the legacy of Whites Spectra in such an edition that it should be praised. The French company coped with this challenge quite well. Everything else is well known to us and things like wireless or featherweight no longer shock us. The novelty is water resistance up to 20 meters, which opens up completely new possibilities.

How does the TARSACCI MDT 8000 fare against this background? Many people would like to know what is the difference. The build quality and carbon fiber used put it truly in a class of its own, but the DEUS II leads the way here by the full length. It’s good, but as we know, everyone is one step behind and it’s been like this for many years. The weight of 1300 grams is currently the standard in the class of professional devices. Technically, however, we live in two different worlds. DEUS II is a multi-frequency metal detector, while MDT 8000 is a hybrid of VLF and PI (pulse induction) technologies.

So what is the advantage of such a solution? The technology is pioneering and patented in the USA and Europe, but does it really give you something more to spend your last pennies on this detector?

Just carry out a simple test and everything becomes clear. TARSACCI allows you to maintain a stable and unchanging ID in the close presence of small pieces of foil, magnetic stones, or high salinity or high mineralization. This advantage makes the device more resistant to masking. It will cope with more difficult conditions without changing the reading due to the presence of the above-mentioned disturbances and without limiting the depth.

A simple test gives the answer. By sweeping a piece of foil the size of a coin and a coin 5-10 cm above it just in front of the TARSACCI probe we have a fixed and non-changing ID. The foil does not change our signal, similarly, coke and rocks, and iron do not have such a big impact. For the sake of accuracy, we are talking about coin-sized items here. The same test in the case of DEUS II already gives a significant drop in ID.

The advantage of the last XP is multi-frequency, which allows the signaling of equally clear objects from both ends of the scale. Even for low and high conductors. Fine gold as well as heavy silver. The performance may be slightly worse, but in the case of one frequency, it will be slightly better. We have to answer the question what are we interested in? Good signaling of various objects or less masking effect in very difficult conditions? It all depends on the place and subject of the search.

Both models of detectors have the ability to fine-tune settings. DEUS II has more possibilities, and the MDT 8000 is simplified to such an extent that for professional equipment from the top shelf, it is simply strange. The producer decided to put everything on one screen. There are no drop-down submenus like in XP. We see everything at a glance and we don’t have to check if one of the many filters is definitely well-selected and does not affect our performance.

In conclusion, the race is fierce and it is difficult to pick a winner and compare both detectors directly. TARSACCI is more of a Swiss army knife, equipment for heavy and complicated scenarios, where high mineralization or salinity requires the use of a heavy caliber. DEUS II is a versatile, fun metal detector that is lightweight and waterproof, with great configurability and wireless connectivity to make your life easier.

XP DEUS II Settings Bible

How to fix XP DEUSA II in the field, or is there some magic program? There isn’t and if you think that then you’ve been scammed like a sucker… there is no such thing and remember that well as it will affect your performance in the future and applies to any other metal detector.

Let’s start with, have you read the user manual? If not, do it twice. Why twice? The second time is for punishment … and seriously for understanding and consolidation. In the era of electronic devices, you can always have it on your smartphone and reach it at any time when you have doubts.

The first thing is to choose a program. Here we must be guided by the conditions and the object of the search. We reach for our bible, i.e. instructions, and choose. For example, we are looking for large silver coins, our choice is the simple DEEP HC program. There are two programs to choose from BEACH for rather dry conditions and larger objects with an upper operating frequency of up to 24 kHz (multi-frequency program). BEACH SENS up to 40khz also in water and in addition to very small jewelry, preferably gold (a joke for water sportsmen).

The PARK program is ideal for dry places, also beaches, and places heavily polluted, especially with foil. For this reason, it has a set of selective discrimination, the so-called NOTCH in the range of 23 to 36 IDs.
FAST program for landfill and heavily mineralized conditions with lots of iron. It is also not very deep, which is worth remembering all the time. The SENSITIVE program is designed for places also cluttered to find very small objects, e.g. thin and hand-minted coins. Good for wet ground full of magnetic stones, coke, or foil. SENSI FT is a modified version of the program for more experienced users. It carries more information in the audio line due to the use of multitone sound. Nuances and details will allow you to better identify items.
For dessert, RELIC is for finding larger objects, but also gives advice on coin-sized artifacts. Deep. An innovative solution is the use of IAR-type discrimination, consisting in the elimination of iron depending on its size – signal intensity. The program gives great results but is more difficult to use, except that it is a typical all-metal without discrimination, signaling all signals with one modulated tone. It can be used, for example, on stubble by lifting the probe up to 15 – 20 cm above the soil level.
On the way, we pass the MONO single-frequency version. It’s such an old, kind DEUS I closed in the form of a separate program in the DEUS II box. Romantic? Definitely! Here you can go crazy and choose any operating frequency. For example, we use the lowest 4 kHz and can use this program to search for deep-seated objects with high conductivity. Similarly, the other way around 40kHz and thin, tiny low conductors are ours. Of course, all this affects the performance and stability of work and requires setting other operating parameters.
I should start with GENERAL because it’s a basic program … If in doubt, I choose this one. Good for wetlands, where we will avoid digging false signals, so-called. ghosts associated with the halo effect. Coke, magnetic stones are omitted. It signals deep targets well.

Let’s move on to tenderness. This is usually already set high in the factory programs, but if the conditions allow, we set it to the level of stable operation, and we try not to overdo it.
Phew, and only now we come to something equally important. Ground calibration. We select a clean spot and use the GRAB function or the middle button with a red circle, the same one that activates the PINPOINT. It is worth mentioning that PINPOINT is a great option for finding a clean place for our calibration, it is simply easy and pleasant. We check the value that tells us what type of soil we have and what to expect. The mineralization level bar should also give us food for thought as to how all this affects our search results.
We are doing a test flight … that’s how we check the degree of litter and the presence of iron. Simply put, are the signals frequent next to each other or rather sporadically every few meters? After the initial analysis, we reach for the REACTIVITY function and this is the key, because both the depth and work in a littered area depend on this setting. A value of 0 to 1 is iron-free and garbage-free conditions. Then the ranges are the best. From 2 to 2.5 medium clutter, and 3 to 5 serious garbage, where there is a signal on the signal and objects detected not too deep. At high values, the separation of objects located next to each other will be the greatest, the opposite range.
We still have SILENCER – you silence in places where a large amount of iron causes crackling and interference. Then we reach for this option, setting it at a level that provides us with the relative comfort of work. It must be remembered that high filters always run the risk of losing the deepest and quietest signals.

Depending on the program, we can choose the level of discrimination and the volume of the leading signal. In both cases, we proceed similarly, we try to find the lowest possible level. Discrimination is often associated with a loss of depth, and in some models causes problems with signal processing when the terrain is heavily littered. The leading signal (depending on the program, e.g. RELIC) must operate at the audible level. Its discrete substitutions will tell us what kind of target we have under the probe.
In the case of beach programs, we have SALT SENS, i.e. compensation for interference resulting from the salinity and conductivity of the ground, and MAGNETIC GROUND, which allows us to avoid masking deep-lying objects by ferrite, black sands – i.e. highly mineralized substrates such as a volcanic or even a stony beach.

We check what level of iron saturation our spot has. Here, the decision made will have an impact on the results. Using IRON VOLUME, we can freely turn down or turn up the sound of the iron. When the iron starts to really bother us, it is worth setting its sound to the most acceptable level. I am against total silence. Firstly, it is a signal that there must have been some human presence in this place, and secondly, in my case, objects made of iron can be no less interesting than those that contain only non-ferrous metals.
AUDIO RESPONSE, i.e. audio amplification. It’s worth checking the setting. Values above 4 may cause a situation that minor disturbances or false signals will mask the quiet and deep and most desirable ones. Too high a value also causes an unpleasant effect of changing the proportion between weak and strong signals.

Finally, the GROUND STABILIZER global filter. Usually set to 2 or 3, where the last number causes a very strong muting of the ground influence on the detector’s operation. The level assigned to the value 1 is already loud and unstable work, signaling, ferrite, ceramics (bricks), causing us a well-known headache with DEUS I, but allowing to reach even deeper where silenced devices do not reach!

Audio can be selected according to the prevailing conditions. PWM or SQUARE. The first traditional one is more expressive and carries more information, unfortunately in more difficult conditions it causes fatigue. The second version is soft and pleasant, perfect for dumpsters, where a lot is going on, and we want to survive in the best possible shape until the end of the day and hear and understand what our wife is saying to us at dinner.

Minelab Manticore or XP DEUS II?

XP DEUS II vs Minelab Manticore who will win this duel? It depends … it depends on what we expect from both detectors because both are really good.

DEUS II is the king of ergonomics when it comes to the lack of cables, weight – 960 grams, and compactness, and there has been no competition in this category for years. What else? The audio was created by a real musician. Also undefeated for years, although Minelab created more pleasant tones and less tiring, also worse describing the subject. What is the difference? On nuances and additional sounds and their change and their modulation and volume. A piece of aluminum in the form of a can sounds differently than a coin, even if it is similar in its conductivity. It’s a lot. After a while, we know what is what. That’s what it’s supposed to be about. Disadvantage? In the long run, such audio can cause fatigue, especially in areas littered or full of iron. This is a minor difference, but for an experienced user, it is crucial.

Do we know anything more? Yes. Thomas Dankowski from the USA is a well-known American device tester before releasing them to the market. Over 40 years of experience is indisputable and his contribution to the development of many well-known devices is crucial. He has been testing Minelab Manticore for over a year and on the Dankowski forum (link: https://www.dankowskidetectors.com/discussions/index.php) he shared his observations with us, comparing it to devices such as XP DEUS II and Tarsacci MDT 8000 which also tested.

The Minelab Manticore was tested on the coast and on the beach, the inland tests simply did not take place and according to Thomas, the new Minelab is a slightly worse separating detector than the XP DEUSA II. Calabash Digger drew similar conclusions in his tests, which can be seen on his YouTube channel.

One important observation has been mentioned, the Manticore will be slightly deeper and it’s a matter of an inch or so (2-3 cm). This means performance at the level of the Tarsacci MDT 8000, which is a PI/VLF hybrid device and this means that such equipment is always deeper.

The 2D visualization of the Minelab detector in a clear field allows you to analyze the target, something more than the well-known XY plot from DEUSA XP. Unfortunately, with a large amount of iron, it does not work so perfectly and can lead to disappointment. As we know, everything requires learning.

The thing to check is the color spoof issue with heavy condensation of rusty items, but that takes time and fieldwork. It should be remembered that new software updates can change a lot for both manufacturers.
